How I found the perfect gift for the man who has everything (And how it cost me less than the price of a pizza…)

We've all been there. It's Valentines day in a couple of days. You know he's got you something great. Probably some expensive perfume. But it's so EASY for him. Jewellery, perfume, flowers, chocolate… buying presents for us girls doesn't require much of a brain. But getting something for him…it's almost impossible.

My history of failure

OK. So, for Valentine's day three years ago I got him 2 CDs. Utter failure: he'd already downloaded them. The next year I went for some clothes and got him a jumper. He hated it – the only successful part was that I got him to come shopping with me when we took it back! So, two horrible NULL points!

I wasn't alone – my friends always find it impossible to buy for their blokes. And Valentines is especially hard – getting him something he likes is hard enough. But something he likes that's also half way romantic. It just can't be done. Well, that's what I thought anyway...

A jumper he hated and CD's he already had: not this year!

The totally unique gift I found for him

First nightThe night my boyfriend and I first met was a classic. I was at a club with a friend and for some reason the police raided it and chucked everyone out. As we were sitting outside wondering where to go next, this bloke who'd also been in the club comes over and starts chatting us up. He's with a few people, and suggests we all go back to his to continue the party. We got to know each other very well at the party! So, why am I telling you all this?

Well, for Valentine's Day – I bought him the club! Yes, the one we'd both fortunately been chucked out of and we met outside of.

Hang on, didn't you say this would cost less than the price of a pizza? And you bought him a nightclub!?

Well, what I did was buy him the nightclub virtually. I bought him a virtual gift – all the rage these days - that consisted of two printable gift certificates and an online account at space02.com where I wrote a message and uploaded some photos. It was perfect – something unique, something creative, something personalised, something romantic. But did he like?

It elicited a "Wow, that's really cool!"

Yes, the perfect compliment for my perfect gift. Ok, "really cool" might not seem much to you, but my boyfriend was really impressed. Yes, with the creative and romantic part….but also with the fact that I'd managed to go online and work out how to use the virtual gift site space02.com. He was very impressed. But don't take my word for it. You can hear from the man himself!

"I thought it was great Pilar had taken the time to come up with a gift that wasn't the usual Valentine's rubbish. In fact, it put my box of chocolates to shame. I now have a permanent reminder of that decadent night we first met!" - Leon

I love it! What do I do now?!

OK. The first step is to head over to the space02.com site. The user interface is a little tricky to start with, but you should get the hang of it. You basically enter the address of the place that you want to buy. So for mine it was "la Macarena, Barcelona, Spain" (yes, we met in Barcelona!). The address should appear on the map. Then you click the icon in the "Stake your Claim" box, and click on exact spot on the map that you would like to buy. Then just give your "space" a name, and click checkout!

Adding the personal touch

The great thing about this is you can add your own message to the certificate. This is really easy to do. After you click "Checkout" you'll have one final view of your cart, and then you add gift wrapping. Here's the gift wrapping that I added for Leon:

How much does all this cost?

There are three sizes you can choose from - small(5m2), standard(50m2) and premium(100m2). They cost $5, $10 and $25 respectively. Personally, I went for the standard size because I wanted to buy the entire club (luckily it was quite a small club!). If your budget is tight you can just go for the small size and get an exact spot you were standing with your boyfriend.

Hey - I just bought a space as you suggested. I got a spot on beach in England that's really special to my boyfriend and me. Thanks so much for the suggestion!
